British Values
At Alexander McLeod, we want every child to grow into a confident, respectful and responsible member of our community.
We actively promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and respect for those of different faiths and beliefs. These values are woven through our curriculum, our relationships and everyday life at school.
Democracy
We make sure our pupils have a genuine voice.
Each year, children elect our Junior Governors, with every class having the opportunity to vote. Junior Governors meet with senior leaders to share ideas, raise issues and help shape school improvement. They also have their own budget, giving them a genuine opportunity to make a difference.
Pupils also share their views through our annual pupil questionnaires and regular opportunities for pupil voice.
The Rule of Law
Children learn that rules exist to keep everyone safe, protect our rights and help our community work well.
Our 3 B’s – Be Ready, Be Respectful, Be Safe – provide a simple and consistent framework for behaviour across our school. Through lessons, assemblies and everyday experiences, pupils learn about responsibility, fairness, consequences and the importance of following rules.
Visits and work with services such as the police and fire service further reinforce these messages.
Individual Liberty
We encourage children to become independent, confident decision-makers.
Pupils are given opportunities to make choices, express their opinions and take responsibility in an environment where they feel safe and supported. Through our curriculum, including PSHE and online safety education, children learn about their rights, personal freedoms and how to make safe and responsible choices.
Mutual Respect
Respect is at the heart of who we are.
Our pupils learn to value themselves and others, understand different perspectives and recognise the impact their words and actions can have on those around them.
This is reflected in our relationships, our curriculum and the way we work together as a school community.
Respect for Different Faiths and Beliefs
Alexander McLeod is a diverse and inclusive school, and we celebrate the many cultures, faiths and backgrounds that make up our community.
Through RE, PSHE, assemblies and enrichment opportunities, pupils learn about different beliefs and traditions. They have opportunities to meet people from different backgrounds, learn from their experiences and visit places of worship.
We want our children to be curious about the world, confident in who they are and respectful of others.
We are a CARING school
Our school values bring everything together:
Community – we belong to and contribute to our community.
Aspiration – we believe in ourselves and aim high.
Respect – we value ourselves, others and our environment.
Inclusion – everyone belongs and everyone matters.
Nurture – we care for ourselves and one another.
Growth – we learn, improve and embrace challenges.
At Alexander McLeod, these values aren’t just words on a page. They are part of everyday life.
